][The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be touched or even seen.][
One of my best mates picked up a copy of Hatter M someplace and she and I started to look through it. I was all in a tizzy about finally seeing it, as I'd only heard of it and never seen it. However, when she opened it to the panels themselves...
...was I the only one a mite disappointed by the art style?
I understand it's his way of working and I suppose that for individual pieces it's a prefectly fine style. I rather like the watercolor feel to it, that I found rather interesting.
But the feel of his lineart just didn't seem right, to me.
I keep saying 'his', 'he', 'nondescript male pronoun' because I can't remember the artist's name off the top of my head.
Was I alone in this?

Eh... Having only seen Issue 1 over the internet (living in Australia sucks MAJORLY when you want to find things like this) I probably shouldn't comment. But yes, I was a little disappointed too. It was just... I don't know. The art didn't look right to me.

I'm glad I wasn't alone, at least. I really was disappointed, I expected it to be far more ... there's a hand motion that goes along with this, but there's not really a word, ha. I half-expected it to grow on me but the longer I've looked, it really hasn't.

I guess the magic thing to ask is "what were you looking for?"
I have to read things end to end, but overall, the watercolor effect seemed right....playing on rain, which creates puddles, things like that. It also over-emphasized the drabness of the regular world...
Now, again, that's by me glancing through the set when I got it for my fiance' for Christmas (he was inundated with that, the books, and the soundtrack all at the same time), but I could probably dig a little closer into them in the near future...

I don't have the comics myself yet, but I like the mood and overall feeling of the comic. The Colouping is amazing though, It personally wasn't how I invisoned Hatter, but still I like the interpretation of the characters located in the comics.

The artist is Ben Templesmith. He is very well known in the comic book community. Frankly I think he is rather good.
However, I do understand that his abstract and often sketch-like art might throw some people off.
You must also consider your pre-conceived biases. If you have read Frank Beddor's works before reading the comic, you have probably already established pre-conceived ideas as to what the world and characters look like in your mind. Thus, when Ben Templesmith gives his interpretation of the world, you might find you disagree.
One persective that might help you establish a connection with the art style is to consider the context of the story. It is a fairy tailish story of Alice in wonderland. I think Templesmiths art establishes how the story might be contrived in the imagination of a young girl, perhaps Alice. If one understands this context, I think Templesmith's style perfectly compliments this perspective with its rough and abstract feel.

Just picked up the Hardcover of Hatter M at Comic Con. Been waiting to read it for some time now...and it was great!!! Its my first venture into the "Looking Glass Wars" and its got me hooked! Templesmith art fits perfectly to this story in my opinion...I know, his art shocked me when I first saw it in "30 Days of Night", but now he's one of my favorites! Very different look and feel than any other artist.
Also, thanks to Frank, Liz and Ben for signing my book, highlight of con for sure.

I haven't been able to get Hatter M. at all. I haven't been out of my house all week because I'm homeschooled. I have no life outside of school and church.
Is this Comic Con the same Comic Con that they played the new Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 trailor for? I saw the trailor on a fansite and it said that the video was from Comic Con. I'm not really "in the know" so what's Comic Con?
Is anybody else here a fan of Avatar?

I think so yes, as I remember hearing about Avatar when I was there. :) Have me a few friends that are into it...
Comic-Con, or San Diego Comic-Con for longer name, is held yearly around the later end of July in, obviously, San Diego. It's probably THE event of the year for the comic industry, and other industries related too it (movies, TV, video games, etc).
You can read up on it at http://www.comic-con.org, and see info on it and its sister conventions, WonderCon and the Alternative Press Expo, or APE. WonderCon, actually, is where my fiance' and I first discovered Looking Glass Wars, as Frank had a table there (and he MIGHT have one there again this coming WonderCon in February).

I was just watching a video on Disney DXD and it was the two guys who play Pintel and Marty in Pirates of the Carribean and they were at Comic Con! Oh, I wish I could have gone! I am a huge POTC fan! But, everybody is!
What other kind of stuff do they have there? I know they have Star Wars stuff there, right? I love the Star Wars movies but I have never read the books. My sister has though. I just can't get into them.

I LOVED ben's art, but i agree, some of it was a little sketchy, and blurry, which can get confusing.
