Her Imperial Viciousness

Seeing that this is an event that Frank will be at, I figured that I would try to see if anyone, by strange chance, might be attending the convention.
My fiance' and I will be there ourselves, and Frank's booth will be among several that we visit (we have friends that publish and SDCC is a major event for them) over the course of our time there. We only plan to really attend Friday and Saturday, however, particularly Saturday as we plan to enter the Masquerade (aka the costume competition).
So...yes! Drop a note if you plan to go...or if there's something I should do on behalf of the denizens of the Forum :)
(nothing that will get me in trouble or publically embarrass me, however..I reserve the right to give the thumbs down on the outright ridiculous ;) )

Pity I won't be able to attend, perhaps next year should circumstances allow.
If it's not too much trouble, do you think you could ask as to the canonicity of the US version's timeline?

I can put it on the list...:) I'm curious as to when it came up....i.e. was it put together already before the first book was completed and added as a bonus afterthought or what. ;D

The convention just posted up it's full schedule (as of today), and while perusing, I found the following in the Friday schedule:
4:30-5:30 Demons, Devils, and Evil Dictators—Come on, villains are the best. Devising new and unique demons and devils is one of the best parts of a fantasy writer's job. Learn about some of the participants' favorite villains and what inspires their own evil imaginings. Watch authors Jon Lewis and Derek Benz (Grey Griffins series), Holly Black (Spiderwick, Ironside), DJ MacHale ( Pendragon: Pilgrims of Rayne), James Owen (Here, There Be Dragons), Frank Beddor ( Looking Glass Wars), Laini Taylor (Fairies of Dreamdark), Rebecca Moesta ( Crystal Doors #2: Ocean Realm), Nancy Holder (The Rose Bride), and William Boniface (The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy) rub their hands and cackle gleefully. Room 1AB
And this one for Sunday!
12:30-2:00 Secret Origin of Good Readers—It’s back, bigger and better than ever! The 7th annual Secret Origin of Good Readers panel features Dr. Robyn A. Hill (National University, San Diego), Mimi Cruz (Night Flight Comics, Salt Lake City), Bill Morrison (creative director, Bongo Comics), Jesse L. McCann (noted children's author), Bill Galvan (creator/artist The Scrapyard Detectives, artist Archie Comics) and Frank Beddor (creator/author/producer, The Looking Glass Wars). The panelists will discuss how teachers, librarians, retailers, authors, artists, and publishers can work together to bring comic books into the classroom for use as an innovative and motivating cross-curricular teaching tool and a vehicle for promoting reading and literacy. Through a multimedia presentation, personal remarks, and a question-and-answer session, the speakers will present an overview of the medium and highlight specific ways that comic books and graphic novels have been used to engage a variety of learners. Breakout sessions will follow the main presentation. The 70-page resource book The Secret Origin of Good Readers is available online for free download - click here to download it, courtesy of XMission.com. Room 3
Unfortunately, I can only attend the Friday panel, though I personally think it will be my favorite one. I'll give a report upon my return!

Actually, it hasn't been held yet. :)
These panels will be occuring at San Diego Comic-Con in San Diego, CA, which is happening in about two weeks. So if you are, by chance, local or in driving distance, you could see the panels (and visit his booth for that matter!).
Which reminds me... a VERY important thing to note: If you are in the area, come across this and think you can go?
PRE-REGISTER ASAP!!!
The convention is over 100,000 people, and last year it was about 120,000. A lot of people were turned away at the door who didn't pre-register, and the tickets for the weekend (and possibly some day-passes) are close to selling out. I can't stress it enough.
If you miss him there, however, he could possibly end up at WonderCon again next February, as he has been the last two years. WonderCon is run by the same folks who run San Diego, but held in San Francisco. While it's not a definite until it's confirmed, it's not impossible that he could come back for a third year. :)
I'll even ask him if he thinks he'll show up for it. *puts it on my little list of 'things to ask/check up on"*

OK, it's less than a week to Comic-Con, and I'm in the middle of some last-minute items before my fiance' and I leave for the craziness!
And by 'craziness', I mean 'four-day badges AND Saturday only badges are currently SOLD out', matched next to "Almost 130,000 people last year". I am sure the word of Redd...er...I mean, ALYSS, will spread quite distinctly over the crowd! :D
So far, the only thing I'm aware of to check on at Con if I get to talk to Frank at all (we hope!) is about the timeline. I've got some of my own queries about Redd herself, which I'll save the details for until I get back. But anything else (that's not spoilery for Book 2), throw it down and I'll try to remember to print out the notes before I leave.

Hello, Your Imperial Viciousness! I've another question, actually: Could you please ask Mr Beddor if he intends to write more after Seeing Redd, or is the sequel the end of it? (I'm certain there's more I'd like to ask, but can't recall at the moment.) Many thanks!

I think I can answer this one right now...if I didnt' know better, I would swear I remember him saying that there were going to be three total books for the entire series. So "Redd" would be #2, and then there should be one last one after this.
I want to say that there was some other side material he was talking about at WonderCon as well..something to do with perhaps another series of the Hatter M comic, if I didn't know better. I'll try to dig up as much good info as I can :)

Hello loyal subjects ;D
I've just returned home from Comic-Con...it was a very busy weekend, but worth it.
It was wonderful to see Frank B. and others at the booth, as well as Frank's panel. He was on stage with a LOT of other people, so he didn't get a chance to speak as much as I'd hoped, but it was fun and we got to see him do the fastest version of his 'quick speech' I think I've ever heard.
Also, the "Her Imperial Viciousness" ribbons were a hit...not only with folks involved with LGW, but with quite a few other people who thought it was extremely clever. In fact, we gave a few to some friends of ours with a baby girl, and somehow seeing one of the child badges with one of those just made my evil little heart fill with glee.
The best part of all...my fiance' is now in possession of the Hatter M hardcover (the cover art for this is VERY nifty), and I have a pretty sparkly shirt and an ARC of "Seeing Redd" I'm going to be spending the next few days devouring it! The only thing I didn't get to do was grab a copy of the absolutely STUNNING poster of the alternate art for Redd's dress, because we didn't get a chance to go back to his booth Saturday due to Masquerade preparations.
Overall, it was great! With that said, I'm utterly exhausted, and must go sleep now.

San Diego comic con was awesome. I ended up volunterring at Franks booth while he was at his panel. Awesome poster of Redd. There was an alternate version of it?
Thanks to everybody who stopped by the booth! We hope that everybody had a great time.
Your Imperial Viciousness, we loved those ribbons. Thank you so much for bringing them to us.
Best wishes,

Basically, there's two versions of the "Redd" cover. The version on the poster was, I believe, the original. The one that is on the book is the more 'modest' version. Both are very impressive.

I'm glad you liked them. :D Sadly, I couldn't get back to give you all more, with Masquerade and all, but I still have quite a bit, and hope to get more in the future (likely in a prettier font though).
And it was great to meet all of you..I was going to actually say something directly TO you to the effect of "so YOU are Mr. Barlow..." My bad, I didn't. :(
But it's good to have a face to the name now, and next time I will be sure to rectify that little problem. ;)

so after we all read this ARC we should really get together and throw a party for our beloved queen. The real one I mean, not the fake prissy thief Alyss. But yes, it'd be fun. We can talk about the books and play mini golf. Or something of the sort. Ionno, ask her Highness how she feels about parties.

I love a party. Especially if it's for ME. *muahahahaha!*
I think WonderCon next year could be a good time to have a little LGW party, myself. I say Metreon and a few rounds of the big-screen video game bowling and munchies. Maybe even a good ale if they have one.... and pretty red badge ribbons all around!

YAY! ... i can't drink Ale. I'm so not legal Ale drinking age. But that's alright. I'll just bring juice along. But I heart bowling. So that works just fine.

All good! I can equally drink soda with no problem. Probaby cheaper and better than beer/ale that they'd have in the Metreon anyhow :P

We'll see if their selection actually impresses me. They had a full bar, I thought, which might help matters (there are really few beers I like, and most of them are stuff only sold in 'real bars'), but if it costs me more than to play Hyperbowl (that's the name of that infernal game...I keep forgetting) to have a drink? I'll go as far as to bring my own beverage from the Kwik-E-Mart.
But I think it could be a fun little event no matter what!

Cat would be a tricky one to do, unless you consider the idea of a fursuit...at least, that's how my mind sees him. If I didn't know better, I would say that Cat's at least as tall as Redd, if not taller (of course, this is assuming I have any sense of how tall Redd is...though I think she's no short lady), so if you're in the six foot range, you've got at least the structural start.
There's a lot of references online for fursuit/mascot type costuming..I have a few of them somewhere because a friend of mine gave them to me for future use (I want to make one of the rat characters from the Secret of NIMH cartoon sometime..specifically the guard Brutus!), but it might take me some time to find. All else fails, there the allmighty search engine! :D

Yea, i'm the height for it. But i feel i'm too scrawny. I have thid odd image of a purple cat though. i don't know where it came from. but he's scary. purple, with darker purple stripes. and fangs. cuz real cats have fangs. not too furry. just a thin layer. ionno, i wanna be cat. i'd need a queen to follow around though

Hmmm..purple could be an interesting alternate color, as in the book, he's orange... You could be one of the prototype Cats!
As for something to follow? Give me time... I'm working on that as we speak. Unfortunately, however, the grand unveiling of what I have in mind cannot be until about 2009, due to wedding things.
But believe me, it's coming.
