Princess in Purgatory: Prologue:
The chess pieces rose like columns of black death around her.
Pawns, rooks, knights, bishops and the rest stood in menacing glory
around their creator. Redd lowered her arms and surveyed what her
imagination had conjured.
Her crimson scepter flew through the ballroom doors and to her
hand as if drawn by an undeniable attraction. She smashed its base
onto the floor and immediatly thorny black vines spread like wild
fire. They crawled across the chess board floor and stalked up the
hard shells of the large chess set. The thorns imbedded themselves in
the frames of the puppets and a single rose blossomed where their
hearts should have been.
As the flowers of Black Imagination breahted life so did the new
creations. The vines vanished into nothingness as the chess board
army moved their limbs for the first time.
Redd slowly approached the Black King. She caressed his face
with her cold fingers.
"One day there will be a great war," she spoke. "On that day,
the pompous self-righteous rodents of the Queen's White Army will meet
their downfall. And you, my King, will deliver it to them."
With that she flicked her wrist as if to dismiss a frivilous idea
and all the chess pieces vanished. Redd had been planning her return
since the day her family stole her heritage from her and shipped her
off to the wretched Isolation Tower. She sat down as a grandiose
chair materialized behind her. In her minds eye she saw King Nolan
galloping across the Boarderland. An evil smirk crossed her face as
she shuffled air. Between his majesty and Heart Palace decks of card
soldiers appeared awaiting orders.
An intricate design began creating itself around Redd's chair.
It was the makings of a looking glass frame. The shiny reflective
surface of which was forming from the design and towards the angry
woman. She imagined seeing Heart Palace. Queen Genevieve, Princess
Alyss, Bibwit Harte, fwoosh!--she fell through the newly created
looking glass.
"Happy Birthday Alyss."
