The Looking Glass Wars trilogy has gaining popularity within my school, and there is talk about some of us dressing as members of the Millinery!
I thought that this would be an interesting topic to start!
Discussions could be held on ways of making the top hats and homburgs, the scepters, or even Redd's dress of flesh-eating roses.

I dressed as a stylized version of the White Rabbit for Halloween this year... a little more punk than Bibwit Harte, but hey, I got a lot of compliments... check it out at Photobucket http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd201/debonair_youth/Wonderland/ or MySpace http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.editAlbumPhotos&albumID=1514258&MyToken=83a05db7-f445-4027-8ea2-67000f54fcc0

Oh and why is this thread called, "Cosplay!" ??
Btw I LOVE your avatar. (-:

I called the thread "Cosplay" because I though it would be a good topic, creating costumes based on the descriptions and art of the Looking Glass Wars universe. I have a friend that has created many costumes in the likeness of clothing from the Final Fantasy universe, and so it came to mind the possibility of costuming in the likeness of the Alyssians, or any of the major characters. =]
Oh, and thanks for the comment about my avatar, it's one of my favorite pics in my portfolio =]

Oh and why is this thread called, "Cosplay!" ??
Cosplay: A shortened form of the word "Costume Play". Very commonly used in the anime community to denote dressing, and in some cases acting like, a favorite character.
In short: This thread be for dressing like somebody and showing the results...or even at very least saying "Hey, I tried to dress up as Redd but I'm so embarrassed by how the photos turned out and how my two inch nails were misbehaving that I am not showing ANYONE how it looked until I come up with something better. :P "

Thanks, Redd... If you need a sidekick, I look good in tight-fitting, dark clothing. I've even came up with a villain name =]
Blackthorn Heart...
My weapon will be a rose-whip

You're gonna be busy o.O
I have a fabric stash too, but I kind of have to hold out on some things until after my wedding, as I have to make things for that first. That's fine though...it's gonna take me a while to figure out how to make the roses move...
..or even some of them. I have to tap a few resources.

Her Imperial Viciousness
12-15-2007, 02:28 PM
80$??!!?? Why would she want to pay that much for a costume?
That's just for the roses, and not for fabric, notions, or even labor.
In my mind (that of a hobby costumer who has built a fair share of outfits from scratch, some including armor, props, and other fiddly bits), a costume for 80 dollars would require some EXTREMELY savvy shopping, and no consideration for payment for the time to make the outfit.
...which could lead to a conversation about commissions and the appropriate prices for building them, but that could be messy :)
Alyria_Bella
12-15-2007, 02:34 PM
$80 for the roses
i haven't told her my price yet let her see the great costume first then lets see her say no

there is several meanings to EMO...1.A depressed person who cuts themselves. 2.A goth person, usually depressed. 3.Someone who dresses in black.

You can all, officially, laugh at me. And for longer than 5 seconds at that.
The only shot of me as Redd from DragonCon last year.
I was frustrated with all of the other ones. :P
The roses I was wearing are missing because this was after a panel I was running and they got in the way.
This outfit wasn't made by me, but was thrown together at the last minute with stuff I had and a dress I picked up (which I swear I am going to dissect and make out of material that isn't craptacular).
It was, however, a good way to get a sense of how I wanted to work with my makeup and the scary-long fingernails.
http://pics.livejournal.com/laragoth/pic/0002e6hr/
You actually get 10 seconds to laugh this time, instead of five. You may need five to get over the initial "That's embarrassing" response.

But few look that hard (nor should they, unless they're my fiance' :D )
Trust me, the Redd that I end up making will be far better :D
PS: The Alice dress is cute! I love the stitched hemline (then again, I am teh Detail Dork! :D)

:eek:I didn't even notice the zipper crooked. But I don't look at details too much (Unless I make the costume)
And the Alice dress needs to be fixed still. The back part is too loose.. and my dad pointed something out about the skirt I need to fix.
But thank you so much for the compliments. ^_^

I don't know if the good many of you have had the same fortune of others to see, but I myself did a cosplay costume of the Lady Alyss. I thought is was a wonderful costume that me and my mother made, I actually made it for all hallows eve in the year 2006 after only being swept off my feet with Frank's tale that September. I was so in love with the book, that that following january when the comic book and anime convention struck my town again I asked Mr.Beddor if he was going and he said "yes". I was so excited that I just had to enter my costume. On the day I was to show him my costume I was so frightened he might not like it, but he looked up and instantly asked me if I was the young lady who had sent him the email, I didn't know how to reply. But just as instinct I turn and lifted the sleeve on my right hand shoulder and there I placed a tattoo of the family seal and he instantly came out gave me a hug and praised my costume. I was so happy, we talked for a small bit and he had more gatherers looking for the truth so I let him to his business. For the rest of the convention every time I wondered by he would look up wave and greet my with "Hello dear Alyss." But the coolest part was six months later, I went to the San Diego Comic Con, Wondering around my elder brother Wayne (who I have hooked onto this trilogy) had found Frank's booth and I was dragged over to it by my brother and family. Ii was dress as a normal person and in nothing noticeable. But when Frank had turn away from another satisfied truth seeker he looked at me and smiled, he continued to say "Whitney! What are you doing all the way in San Diego." My fathers mouth had dropped open, I myself was in bafflement, He remembered who I was and my name. True to his kind form he had apparently shown the picture we took together back in January to his assistants and they, recognized me as well. I felt as though I had been some how included in his work that day, even though I had never been mentioned in word or write, Ii felt as though Frank had made me apart of the story or Alyss Heart, and I thank him for it.
And after all that here are the photos:

Sadly, I can't see photos at the moment, but I'm truly looking forward to it...
But yes, I think Frank's going to be very happy to know that the costumer contingent is starting to gather for LGW. I already know of people out there that are planning things, and I've got stuff just STARING at me for Redd, waiting for my wedding to pass so it can get some real attention. The roses that I made back in February was a way to vent out some of what has been in my head in the midst of all of my wedding wear (it was a nice feeling going away from cream and white to RED).
And yes, he DOES get excited about peoples' imaginations firing off in the costume department. If QAH's story doesn't prove it, here's another....
I mentioned to Frank last year at WonderCon that I was hoping to put Redd together, I was just low on pictures and such. Anyhow, coincidence was that the next day he was going to bring the artwork for Seeing Redd on hand to view (the final book version, not the initial version with the more revealing outfit). Sure enough, next day he had it (and I was DUMB for not photographing it, because it was GORGEOUS).
Anyway, I'm gawking, trying not to drool, etc, because the painting was VERY much similiar to what I had in mind to do. Frank looks at me with this peculiar expression and says "What do you think?"
My response was some jamble of squee and grand approval. I won't try to quote myself exactly, it would be just too hard.
At that, Frank lets out this huge sigh of relief and says "Good! I was so worried you wouldn't like it!"
But yes...all goes well, this time next year I will have some SERIOUS work put into Redd, perhaps she may even be close to done (as her first event, if I can manage it, will be Costume-Con 27 in Baltimore).

Truthfully, nothing drawn. It was literally "all in my head" ;)
There's a little sketch that I used to keep in the back of LGW that I have somewhere, but it's not dated or anything, and it's very rough. You won't see much similiarity other than it had a big dress, a fitted bodice, and a crown...a very structural little piece.
Beyond that, it was kind of hazy. And then, the art work came and BOOM :)
It all made sense ;D But then, of course, it all ended up having those things called "parameters". The good thing? I had a vision. The bad thing? Well, um..now I have to be accurate ;)

It's Ghetto!Redd. Pushed it together for DragonCon this year. Now, bear in mind, I'm missing the roses I had on both arms because this was taken after a panel I gave. However, I'm pretty proud of the makeup, the nails (not that you can see them well) and the very down-the-nose glare that my friend caught in the shot.
Sadly, it's also the only real shot that I got of it too :( Ahwell..

In the midst of all that which is "wedding progress", I decided that I wanted to show off a different form of progress; that of finding fabric for my Redd costume.
http://pics.livejournal.com/laragoth/pic/0002y571
Bear in mind, what you see here is what has been gathered over...quite some time. The bolts that my arm is sitting on are my most recent acquisition; three different shades of red silk at 10 yards each. They were on sale, so I took advantage of the opportunity while I had it. There will likely be leftovers, but that's OK..I'm a costumer and I WILL find a use for it!
The skull fabric was a gift from my fiance': he thought it was a fun bit of material and figured I could find a use for it somewhere. I am thinking it will either line the bodice or become the main fabric for the corset.
Of course, in my eagerness to photograph fabric, I didn't get photos of the mess of fake red roses that, if all goes well, will become the flesheating roses.
All goes well, I'll start drafting her around October or so..I'll need some time to recover after the mad scramble of marriage before I dive in again!
Another thing I thought I would show..while not -entirely- cosplay related, I figured folks would get a laugh over. You all have seen my more recent icon. Here is what it came from:

Well, I had to get all of this gradually...I think it's been about a year now of just collecting it, and some of it is from another costume that I have that is also red. I have a budget to play with, but it's not huge (especially since the wedding is eating much of it right now XP).

Depending on your range, there are some machines out there that aren't too horrible price-wise. I know there were some out there that are under 100 dollars, though I'm not sure of what they are able to do other than stitch a line...which may be all you might need.
We have three machines right now; my fiance' wanted one for himself to learn on, and I have two, one of which I might end up selling if I get my longfully longed-for embroidery machine. Then again, having more than one is great when you are using different feet and you don't want to have to constantly change back and forth between them (found this joy after spending a LOT of time gathering fabric strips for ruffles..).
What we really need is a place with one more bedroom that can serve as a sewing room. :P

Lol! I understand the two foot thing. -sigh- I had two, then my mother took hers back and my other one crapped out on me. The machine I really want is 200-ish.. and even some of the ones that only stitch lines are too expensive right now. I need to find a better job. And I want a Hello Kitty Machine. But the only one I know about is a collectors thing and cost too much for me to be able to afford it. lol...
And I want a studio.. that would knock out the room for my art stuffs and a sewing room. ^_^

I wish I had a stack of fabric like that.
I'm pretty excited, as my first comicon will be coming up in January, and it just so happens that Beddor and Templesmith will both be there. My anime-freak friends had been mentioning the con for come weeks before, and I was considering going, but Beddor's appearance bought me over.
I also can't imagine not cosplaying, since it just wouldn't be in the spirit if I didn't. After much debate over the character (I was mainly considering Redd, Hatter, or Molly) I have decided to go as Molly, even though she's not my fav character, for the two main reaosn of 1. Her coat is way cooler than Hatters, and 2. My experienced friends informed me that dress + comicon = bad.
So right now I havm't got anyhting done for the costume yet other than some ball point pen sketches on a 3x5 notecard of some details and some aspects I will be allowing myself artistic license on (namely the back of the coat).
So yeah, can't wait to get some pictures up and see some of everyone elses ^^.

Trust me, it took time to get that pile together alone. I have other fabric too...for other projects and the like. I think I have a good four boxes total, but I really need to check my storage and confirm. In fact, I need to go through and possibly get rid of things!

Which con is it, if I might ask? I'm noticing more and more appearances at things of late, and more with Templesmith alongside. REALLY hope he is at WonderCon this year, though if I had to pick, I'd actually prefer he be at SDCC, because that's when Redd will finally make her debut.

Depends on the situation. A dress with a train is usually problematic because the crowds can stomp all over it. If you have a train, you really want a way to pull it up with you so you can move yourself a bit better. Redd...well, depending on the end results, really. If I can, I'll try to make her without too much train, but I'll still need someone to probably walk behind me and spot my backside. Hmmm...perhaps I need a bunch of people dressed as Glass Eyes...
Can we say "entourage"? XD

Hey, at this point, artistic license isn't a bad thing, I don't think. I realized that while I'm using the cover art for "Seeing Redd" as my reference, there are things I might change for the sake of either comfort, practicality, or just for the sake of making sure it's flattering. Fun stuff...

It would be the Phoenix ComicCon in January. It used to be the first thing on the news box until it broke ^^. I would love to go to Wondercon if Beddor is there, especially if you're there in our dress, From what you've been saying it wounds like it will be a work of art.
Yeah, my friends' main warning about the dress would be the weight, and the fact that it would probbaly get annoying to wear. They also have a tendency to play some pretty rough games in cosplay (such as Red Rover) which might have influenced their advice.
On top of that I'm probably going to be taking some of the money for it out of my laptop fund, which I would really perfer to leave nearly as is. Molly's outfit is probably a whole lot cheaper than Redd's.

Ohyeah! *duhmoment* I hadn't thought about that one, but I think he was there last year as well.
WonderCon is a great con to go to if you want a taste of San Diego and haven't gone yet. It's smaller, yes, but for some it's far more managable. And now that they have a masquerade too, it's even more like The Big One. Not to mention, it's where Hubby and I first discovered LGW (well, the art anyhoo).
Redd...as much as I'd LIKE for her to be ready for WonderCon, it's all about San Diego. Right now I'm still fighting with corsetry and HOPING that what I have in mind will hold up my plan for the flesh-eating roses. And I'm still grumping that as of now I can't figure out how to make them move. It'd be neat if their mouths would make those nice little "OMNOMNOMNOM" gestures.
Edit: If I get crazy, however, there COULD be a chance I'd make a very simplified Redd....it's hard to say at this point.

If I had enough people willing to dress the same? I'd be all over it. I actually tried to figure out how they'd work out the eye "crystals", though sadly the first choice I had would be..um..'spensive. It involves contact lenses that were very similiar to what was used by Vin Diesel in Chronicles of Riddick...

New year, and I thought I'd stick out a sort-of status report :)
After about five different fittings, I managed to finally start cutting fabric for Redd's corset. Sadly, I'm a little behind on the "have her underpinnings done by the end of the year" thing, but I think I can make the end of this month if I work at it.
As of now, all the fabric has been cut and pieces partnered. I now have to tack down all of the pieces so they don't slide about and then start putting them together. In the process of this, I'll need to then start sewing the lines that make the channels of the boning.
I also have a draft of the skirt pinned together and ready to sew together so I can start making adjustments and working on the designs of the roses. I'm having some thoughts about just how to arrange things and have a series of sketches to work with. I don't have a scanner or I'd show them off, but perhaps I could take photos...
Speaking of which I'll see if I can get some photos by the end of the weekend of at least the corset. I wish there was more to see, but I am estimating that more "revealing" photos will be able to come out once I start cutting actual dress fabric and working on props.
Sometime in the next couple of weeks I am going to start figuring out my final shade of red for my hair and playing with makeup trials. I need to doublecheck ONE last thing on that department however....*peers at eye color websites*

The real fun usually always starts once I'm working with the actual materials. First drafts are a pain, but they have to be done otherwise things fit crappy, especially with anything remotely historical. or closely fitted XP

The stays (corset) are almost done. I should be able to post a photo or two later this week or this weekend. Also, the bodice and skirt muslins are cut and (mostly) assembled so I can start the fitting on those, and then start working out how the roses and such will be administered. The bodice will be fairly easy, as the lines of the seams actually run about where I need certain elements, but the rest needs sketching out.
In the meantime, I'd like your opinion on something. Hubby and I saw Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and I found Victor's makeup to be quite similiar to what I am thinking to do with Redd. Here's a photo for an idea:
http://media.outnow.ch/movies/images/2009/Underworld-RiseOfTheLycans/movie.fs/16.jpg
The photo mostly shows what I want to do, though I will have to modify it for stage and not screen, and appropriate adjustments will need to be made. Interestingly, the photos I find online don't accurately reflect what I saw while watching the movie, which is much closer to what I have in mind. But overall, this shows the gaunt look I want to achieve, without ending up shock-white.
Thoughts? You all would be those who would know Redd as much as me, and know what you would expect. ;) Think I'm cutting the shrubbery in the right general direction?

I've seen it too and I know what you're talking about with the differences from picture to screen. I definitely think that, if you can pull it off without becoming freaky white, it would be quite perfect. I have utter confidence in you, so I'm sure that it will come out JUST fine. :)

The photo, I think, has the main skin tone, and the movie has more of the shadow highlights.
I need to do my monthly-ish blood bath, aka hair dying, and I may see what sort of "test run" I can do this weekend. I've been thinking of it for a while now, time to get in some action on it!

You can laugh at the fact that my phone had to be plugged into the wall to get this photo. The fates had it against me for this, because my phone was nearly dead and the camera batteries were totally gone. Maybe with good reason, because it's not that flattering.
I need to lighten my hair. It's way too dark. It'll be fine by July, but I forgot this was the shade of Garnier that usually ends up looking more brown than red. Blah.
But you can see the stays are done now. Other than the fact that I put in the lacing holes incorrectly (which only matters if you are trying to be historically accurate) I'm very happy with it. I also put on the other parts and draft pieces I have so far and while I need to trace out a size up on the pattern (Simplicity says I'm a size 14...I'm normally an 8 in dress sizes, sometimes a 6...you can see where this suddenly gets confusing). The skirt needs to be made longer and a small adjustment made on two seams to make the way it trains a little more smooth but beyond that, the next step is drafting out the detailing so that it can be later transferred.
Woo!

WHOA. That's lookin' like it's coming along great! I love the red material that you used for the stays. From what I can see it seems like it has an accordian-like texture along with a different pattern on the material itself. I like detail.
I actually think that your hair in that darker shade of red compliments the dress. I think it looks more evil being darker than it. I don't know, but I imagined Redd with a darker shade of red hair. Well, I love it and that's my opinion. :D
The white stuff makes Redd look like a German bar maid or something. Sorry, was that harsh. I know you worked so hard. I feel bad. But of course, I don't know what you have planned and you're not done yet. I guess, I'm just trying to critique and not diss. I know I always don't like it when people never critique my stuff. So that's just my input. Just my opinion.

The "accordian" look comes from the boning channels and all of the steel stuff inside. And yes, there is a different pattern...kind of a floral foil thing. If you go back a page or so there is a photo (I have had this THING lately with taking the shots on my camera phone, which is horrid) with the stays before they had any channels or boning in it, where you can see the material better.

It's..not bad. I just don't feel attached to it yet, because it looks too brownish to me. I have a better shade that will be dark, but will have a nice strong red instead of weird brown ;)

HAH! That's a good one, actually. I wouldn't want Redd serving me MY beer. I'd be afraid of what she'd imagine was in it XD
The white thing underneath (a chemise that I use for another costume normally) is just so that I'm *ahem* modest. If that wasn't there I could not validate the appropriateness of showing the photo of the stays here ;) The chemise I have planned for Redd will be a slightly different version of this, and will by no means be white.
Here's the base of what I am using right now. Bear in mind, I'm just using the bodice, the skirt I have planned is different:

I will preface this with...this is going to be a lot of photos. But since I've suffered you with camera phone photos for so long, I figured it was time to do something different.
So here we go!
I will preface this, as I did in my personal journal, that the photos were taken before I built the draft for the detatchable fur collar. So the collar you see, while it will be part of the dress, it will be hidden by the fur when I'm wearing it.
This is currently only in muslin...I haven't touched "real fabric" because there is a great deal of fitting that needs to be finalized before I move forward.
So here we go!

View of the front.
http://www.lara-goth.com/reddprog/reddjan18-2.jpg
The other side of the front. It's hard to see, but there are some rough sketches of the designs that will be applique'd on the front.

The back. You might see a faint orange spot on the bodice..that's because I used some fabric that was part of my airbrush practice to build the draft of the bodice.
http://www.lara-goth.com/reddprog/reddjan18-6.jpg
Closer shot of trim and fabric. The darker color is about the same shade of red as the main fabric, though it's base color is green, not black like the main fabric. In the right light, the fabric looks very green with hints of red to it.

Why thank you :) I've been doing costumey things for around four years now on a regular basis, but I admit that I'm still touching only the tip of the iceberg in what I feel I should be doing. But that's the fun thing...keep making things and you indeed start to improve.

Indeed it is, which is funny because he is a boy. But he's a boy betta, and he came to me last year with a very angry and flare-happy temperment, so he truly earned the name in spite of his gender.

oh, definitely agree with the practice thing. I think it's more an issue with budget then. And we totally don't want to be good at everything...so I think costume designing for us will be a talent less explored.
it should really show how much you improved then because I think that is a spectacular costume. :D

very Redd. What else needs to be done besides adding those roses? I think the roses will totally give it tons of texture, which will dramatically heighten its beauty. ;) Does it have a train? It looks very clean cut at the moment, but I will not judge it. I know it is not done yet.

Oh man...where do I begin!
This is just the garment building stage at the moment, which is why the dress looks so "clean". Here's the rough list of what has to happen next:
-Finish bodice construction
-Add hook closures to front, possible small modesty panel
-Start drafting the paint detailing on bodice and skirt
-Sew and stuff vines
-Paint detailing
-Sew on vines
-Build roses
-Work out attachment of roses to skirt
-Build staff (its own sub project)
-Build crown
-Do more makeup practice
-Any other stuff that I have to do that I haven't thought of.

A little. I was going to try to have more, but to be honest, it's a little bit dangerous for this particular outfit. Too many chances for people to step on me (which actually happened last I entered this contest..people can't help it, they just can't see very well in the dark).

Will stick stuff out here as it's coming along. You won't see it all together until July, but I have no problem showing the parts. :)
may I ask what you're planning to make the scepter and crown of? or are you just gonna order them custom made. LOL. :p
I'm actually going to stick to the staff that she carries around. A little bit easier and actually bigger too, which will be good on a big stage.
But it'll be made out of a combination of MagicSculpt and wood...and whatever is needed to get what I have in mind going.
The crown is already started, and is currently made of a headband and a set of christmas ornaments. Doesn't look like much now, but that's the usual thing when stuff like this is getting built.

Well, plastic icicles ARE part of the equation...to get the big spiky bits. But there is going to be other stuff too. We'll see what happens :)

Crown is finished.
Staff is started.
Skirt has been marked with vines, and I need to mark the bodice but I can't do that until I do the fit to see where the closure needs to be exactly (yeah, I'm precise about that stuff).
Still to do:
Finish Staff
Finish decorating Bodice and Skirt
Make bitey roses for skirt
Make fur collar and wrist pieces
For presentation:
Make documentation
Write up presentation
I have six weeks to be absolutely, completely finished. Yeep.

Nobody gets to see the full effect until July, when I finally put everything on...makeup, hair, clothes, the whole nine yards. The effect just won't be the same if I spoil it too much.
There will be more photos, however. at the moment, there isn't much more to see than what has already been put up to view. Don't worry though....more photos are coming :) I just want there to be a difference from what you saw last.
I could show you my very hokey (currently) Crystal Communicator prop. I have a better idea since I found a new light-up mechanism recently, which would be smaller, but if I don't use it for that idea, I have a strong feeling it will be useful for something else...

*LOL* Everyone wants to be a Queen XD
The funny thing is that I kind of thought the crown was...well, it's hard to think of what it was supposed to look like. Though when I was working on it, I did end up listening to the audio book and hearing the part about when Redd killed Genevieve and that she more or less took her crown. That, combined with the cover, I just decided to run with the idea that Genevieve's crown got a makeover.
BTW your hair is also gorgeous. Wish I had hair like that!
It's a mess right now. It's not gotten so much as trim since my wedding, so condition-wise it sucks. But that's OK. Redd's hair is probably no better (and I'm sure that the braids will make it look even more horrid).
After this, it's gonna be a wig for Redd. I really like my hair shorter than this.
Thanks for keeping us updated! Your costume rocks!!!!!
As updated as I can without ruining it all in the end ;) I have to leave SOME of this a mystery...otherwise you all know too much XD

And as soon as I can, photos will appear. I may have to rely on others to TAKE them (it's not like I will have my camera on me..I'll be lucky if I have my phone!) but it will happen...because there are usually about 50 photo/press nerds that take pictures in the "photo pit..."

We'll say #24 in honor of one of the Glass Eyes.
Writing out the scripted presentation today. You know..it may not SEEM much, but it is. You wanna make sure it's right, because you really only get to do it once for the first time. Have to make an impression.
It can be hard, however, digging for my inner Redd. She likes to bury herself very deeply.
I have a small rose-mouth that I am hoping to cast in resin for a self-created imagination weapon....a whip of flesh eating roses and "razor vines". The trick, however, is whether I can make it and make it look RIGHT.
Wish me luck....the awesome thing is that I can hook it to the back of the dress and it can add to what's already going to be there...

Watch the Masquerade! That is where she will be :) On stage, and in front of many people (the latest count on Ballroom 20 is 4,200 people..and that is just the one MAIN room where everything happens. I think the two overflow rooms are 1 or 2000 each).
No, really, please come! I'd love to have some folks cheering out there. The more the merrier.

Here's some info that should help!
http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_masq.shtml
Scroll down the right side a little bit and you'll see something that says "Attention All Cosplayers"...the rules on things are there. You should have no problem but they will want you to do something resembling peace-bonding, even for plastic swords. But some of it also depends on if you're part of a group photo op or something. I've noticed that if people are posed for pictures they leave you alone, you just have to lock everything down when you're just walking around.
Hopefully will be able to see you! What days are you attending?

Well you COULD rig something up, you'd just have to be careful and save the pop-in/pop-out for photo ops.
By the way.. I don't think anything pops OFF of Hatter's backpack. I think it can pop out and be grabbed to throw...but then you just don't throw things :)

Huh, I had read it imagining retractable pieces which can be removed if need be. And kept thinking that with the art work in the graphic novel. My imagination tends to run away on things like that though. :p
Also, it would be a blast to build. Every play I have worked on has been contemporary clothing, so I would love the challenge of something with a Victorian look and moving pieces.

.....aaaaaand this is a problem how? :D
See, I thought you were thinking of stuff that would actually pop off and fly at somebody (which is obviously bad). But hey, my imagination is very fluffy right now and possibly full of fumes.
All I will say is the following: magic sculpt, fake roses, paint, fur, and cheesy costume whips.

By the way, I plan to have badge ribbons that say "I Saw Redd" at the Con...along with another "Secret" ribbon that I can't say the specifics on, but I think will be appreciated :D

Especially if Redd is..um...incognito.
See, the "plan" is that after all the heck I go through on Saturday, I'm not going to want to wear Redd on Sunday. However, it's not entirely impossible that I'll, say, walk around with the crown on my head and other things that will say "Yes, I was that evil woman on the stage last night, what of it?"
Incidentally, I will probably be in possession of the doll version of Alyss that I have...there is an Asian Ball Joint Doll panel at noon and I'm taking her there. I'm half tempted to find a little cage and claim that I finally have my niece as a prisoner.
Muahahahaha.
Ohyeah..progress report: There has been LOTS of it! I'm a happy girl. However, my goal is to have the dress done by Wednesday. This...will be INTERESTING, to say the least!

PUFFY PAINT!! haha... just kidding... unless you're really going for that look. Ummm... I believe my art teacher has said a thousand times that acrylics don't come out of clothes, so that might work. As long as it has time to dry, and you put cardboard or something under each layer of fabric so it doesn't leak to the other side. Maybe. You should look it up on the internet, it's quite useful. :)

There's a variety of paints, depending on the purpose you have in mind.
Puffy paint is possible, but is risky because it can crack and break, looking quite unattractive.
For the vines on Redd's dress, I used a standard acrylic paint and a brush, if that helps.

Ummm I can't tell if you're sarcastic or not... If you are, haha!! If you aren't it's mainly water, so yes it will come out.
Oils might also work, but it takes much longer to dry. But I'm not quite sure if it really does work though. My art teacher is allergic to them so I haven't been able to experiment. I also believe Oils are more expensive, so unless you want to pay (unless I'm wrong), I'd stick to acrylic.
