Frank Beddor has joined Kids Need to Read, a children’s literacy charity founded by the author of The Softwire series, PJ Haarsma, and actor Nathan Fillion. Kids Need to Read sells special donation packages, the profits of which are used to buy books for struggling schools and libraries. Additional money is raised through weekly auctions, which have proven very popular among sci-fi fans and literacy advocates.

Kids Need to Read is thrilled to have Frank join our foundation. We are auctioning a special The Looking Glass Wars package generously donated by Frank at http://community.kidsneedtoread.org/?p=110.

As always, 100% of the proceeds from this auction will go to purchasing books for schools and libraries through the Kids Need To Read program. Bidding starts immediately and opens at $30.00.

We’ll see you on the other side of the looking glass!

interesting, i've never heard of that charity...

It's relatively new. It started up in August of this year. It is a children’s literacy charity founded by the author of The Softwire series, PJ Haarsma, and actor Nathan Fillion. The major fundraising avenue for Kids Need to Read are these weekly auctions.

Frank joined the program a week or so ago: http://community.kidsneedtoread.org/?p=104

Wow. Cool.

It is very cool! And would make a very awesome gift for my cousin! He's 11 and just discovering the sci-fi / fantasy world of books!

Interesting. Hey, so this dosnt go with the topic, but wat is Softwire? is it good?

Not terribly off topic. The Softwire rocks! The first novel in the series is Virus on Orbis 1. The second novel, Betrayal on Orbis 2, comes out in March. It's a young adult sci-fi novel. I'm all grown up and I enjoyed it very much!

It's about a group of orphaned kids forced to work as slaves on the Rings of Orbis. JT is the main character and he discovers that he is the first human Softwire - he has a special gift that allows him to enter any computer with his mind. As you can imagine hijinx ensue! PJ Haarsma created an amazing world with some amazing characters. Totally takes you off planet Earth and transports you to a very elaborate alien nation.

It's a great read and I highly recommend it...especially if you're a sci-fi fan. PJ also created an MMORPG game to go along with the book at www.ringsoforbis.com.

You will like the Space Jumper characters in The Softwire then...they're is something very mysterious about their origin and they're role on Orbis. It's not all flushed out yet...I'd equate the Space Jumper characters to Hatter M and the Millinery.

You can check out the author's page at www.pjhaarsma.com.

BTW. The Matrix rocks! :D

Went to the website for the game. Looks cool, but it is like a video game you download, or just an rpg where you roll dice and stuff?

Went to the website for the game. Looks cool, but it is like a video game you download, or just an rpg where you roll dice and stuff?

It's a fully realized 2-D RPG online game. It's fairly competitive and has a lot of players.

Once you register (it's free) you are directed to a 'quick start guide' which explains the rules and goals of the game. The goal is to become the most powerful citizen. This involves unexpected battles, acquiring chits (common currency) and taking care of your knudniks (indentured workers).

The book is told from the perspective of the humans (or knudniks/indentured works) and the game is played from the perspective of the alien races on Orbis who own the humans/knudniks.

Am I making any sense...I'm terrible at explaining the game.

I know it has pretty specific rules for the password it must contain at least two of the following: one small case letter, one capital letter and one number. They must also be 8-16 characters long.

I also left a comment for the admin regarding this...

well igot the site to work and it looks to me like another free-text/2-d game with no real game playing(that why its free) no download required(anther reason why its free) and no offense but i'm not really into those kinds of games, i need visual aid...a 3-d based game, although, despite my criticism, the game is quite catchy. I spent about 2 hours on it playing various mini-games(which the game is basically based off of) and figuring out what is what. Thank for reffering it to me and i will look into reading the novels.:D

Miss KK

No offense taken my friend. Thanks for checking it out. Appreciate the feedback...so what games do you enjoy playing?

PS - I agree with you, it's very catchy. Several of my friends are addicted to the game. Perhaps after you read the books you'll find the game more interesting!

Miss KK

Rings of Orbis is a 2-D game only. I believe L of S was saying that he prefers 3-D games because he needs that extra visual aspect.

How does one go about getting himself put into the ADFA? I'm making an assumption that this is the Australian Defense Force Academy. (I had to google "ADFA")

Alyria_Bella

He pisses off his dad one of the big people of ADFA
and yes ADFA means Australian Defence Force Acadmy

Please tell me that Mr. Beddor did not say such a thing.... my looking glass with shadier if this be true. Wonderland boring.... that is blasphemy! Still, the man is generous to a fault and a very kind man.;)

The thing that was mention was a mentioned thing that was erased from all records (like wikipedia), when wonderlanders like myself were miffed ... some were quick to make the comments dissapear.

So while proving and disproving is approving and soothing, I can not do one or the other.
Behooves me to change subject to something new...

Let me not rob the point, that this Auction Package is a frabjous idea.
I just hope childern will take the time actually read Alice in Wonderland... and discover something much more powerful...

the power of imagination.

rather than swordfights, and ill (MTV) love stories.
