I've read the book, and the comics that are up so far. Plus I have the soundtrack.^^ I think it's a great book, and this is coming from someone who isn't usually an Alice in Wonderland fan. I'm excited for the other two books to get out.

I have not finished it entirely...I'm trying to savor it! But, I will be happy to talk about what I have read! I absolutely love how I come across little things here or there, and I'll go, "So, that's why so-in-so in Alice in Wonderland is like that!"

I have recently finished the first novel, and I eagerly await the next one to be released. As a childhood fan of Alice in Wonderland, and a fan of generally every adaption since, this version I have come to especially love. It's brilliant in the sense that every character is multi-faceted and dynamic. The story shows struggle and joy through mere words.
And not just that, but the small temptation to make a Hatter Madigan costume is floating in my head as a result.

It isn't, but I was at a ComiCon in Arizona. Frank Beddor was there, so I was able to get a signed copy of the book for my friend, plus the soundtrack. I love it.^^

No you weren't. "Oh boo hoo the Cheshire Cat killed my daddy CRAWLING IN MY SKIN"
We didn't even get to 'see' any happy moments between him and his dad. They were hinted at, but weren't shown. And seriously, there's one scene where he cries a single tear as if it were Eragon (you won't believe how many people hate that book).

I have yet to finish the novel, but I plan to tonight. I read the first 194 pages in 2 hours. The last hundred or so should be easy.
I'm amazed how much this book just took over my mind. I can't get it out of my head. The author has a wonderful imagination. I hope he does well for it.

I agree, but not in a good way. A criticism I have with the book is that it feels all too cinematic, and since Beddor rarely describes smells, taste or how something feels, it feels like the reader is 'watching' the world rather than exploring it. What do tarty tarts taste like and how do they differ from regular tarts? In the original Alice, Carroll described what the Drink Me potion tasted like, didn't he?
There are good books and there are bad books, there are good movies and there are bad movies, but books are not movies and movies are not books. That's why movie adaptations have to leave stuff out. One advantage books have over movies is that they can help put you in the characters' minds, so you become the characters. With Beddor, I just felt I was watching his characters on the big screen rather than entering their minds, really. Just my opinion.
Does anyone mind if I post criticism? I mean, IMHO, you people seem more polite and friendly than, say, the guys on the Paolini boards who say 'ZOMG ur rong eragon rulz' if you post one teeny derogatory thing about Eragon or Eldest.

I haven't finished the book. Granted I only have a few more pages to go till I do though. So here it goes. I like it. It's a welcome addition to the Alice/Alyss storyline. There have been quite a few Alice transistions and very few have been any good. In fact I can only think of 2. The movie "Mirrormask" and the manga "Alice 19th." Congrats.

I discovered this book about a year ago (or possibly back in about January-ish, it seems like a while ago anyhow and I've read too many books before and since to be 100% sure) and I've read it twice so far. I must admit that I did enjoy it rather a lot, but it looks a lot better than it reads if you know what I mean... Well, like McGeesJabberwok said, it reads more like a movie than a book (though I must say that I did enjoy Eragon and Eldest, though they weren't especially well written); it's too heavily plot driven and many of the characters remain underdeveloped (though this may be due to the fact that it's a trilogy and, therefore, unfinished). As far as the quality of writting goes, it's not exceptional, but it's better than many things I could care to name. It's certainly written better than Harry Potter (which is very basic, though is more descriptive than "Looking Glass Wars"), though I don't see it attaining the same level of cult status because it lacks much of the charm of Rowling's creation. I think my inner English teacher (who is a slightly scary middle-aged woman with an iron-grey bun and penchant for tweed skirt-suits and pearls) would haved graded it thusly: "A good effort, but could do better."
Having spouted off all that slightly pretentious nonsensicalness, I must say that despite the heavy critism, I did enjoy the novel and would like to see how the story continues to unfold in future novels. If it ever does get turned into a movie, I would probably go and see it. I would love to work on the costumes for it, were such a thing possible *sigh*... a girl can dream, can't she?

foolhonkery. Wow, never using that word again. Anyways, NO! LGW is way better than Potter in every way shape and form. Or perhaps thats my obsession with all things Alice since my youth. Which would be to say since the previous parts of my youth since I'm still in it. Which is to say I'm young. Which isn't to say I'm old, not even middle aged. In fact, not even out of my teens. Oh bother, now I've gone and confused myself. What did I mean to say? Oh yes
The Heart Crystal. If inventions that go through the heart crystal become ideas for simplier versions in other worlds. Then by Redd passing throughl, is it possible for her not to come through as an idea but as a new life. A newborn with all the knowledge, power, and memory of the original. And if so, then has Redd discovered the secret to immortality. Or will she just end up as inspiration?

foolhonkery. Wow, never using that word again.
But foolhonkery is a brilliant word! MUAHAHAHAHA!
Anyways, NO! LGW is way better than Potter in every way shape and form.
Hope you don't mind if I disagree with you. Contrary to what the prevous poster said, HP is better-written than LGW. LGW's style felt quite basic and choppy. I mean, for example, all this onomatopeia durng fight scenes and stuff:
'Here's to my legacy,' Redd said, lifting her sceptre. But the moment its cold blade touched the tender back of Alyss's neck -
Zzzomph!
- the scene vanished...
Zzzomph? What is that? (And shouldn't it be Alyss', rather than Alyss's?)
Here's another example where LGW's writing faulters:
He reached for his top hat but it was gone, which was bad news. Really bad news.
The above quote sounds way too colloquial and clear for something meant to be serious and mature, and since this book is set in the past, jarrng sentences like this lift us out of the milieu.
Anyway, on the subject of how LGW compares to HP, Lord Voldemort is a lot more intimidating and frighteneing than Redd. Redd may have black teeth, but Voldemort has a snake-like face, pale skin and his goal is more original; Redd wants to rule Wonderland while Voldemort wants to conquer death.
The book has the answer:
'Redd as we knew her may no longer exist. But just as when an invention passes through the crystal to inspire imaginations, so her spirit will certainly pass down and remain for all time an animating force. Jumping into the crystal has made her immortal. As to what forms she may take in the future, I can't presume to say. But I do fear for the universe.
TenchinoYami
11-10-2006, 08:26 PM
wow...
but thats where my question comes from.
If it remains forever an animating force, will that force be an idea of destruction, or a rebirth of hatred itself. I mean an acting force can both be a simple thought bubble or a life with a grander purpose.
And just because Voldermort has hygene problems, skin cancer, birth defects, and wants what everyone whose ever lived wants, doesn't make him a better baddy than Her Imperial Viciosness. Besides if they got in a fight. He'd be dead before he got a chance to grab his wand.
Oh I forgot! The choppy style of writing, I think, is a reflection of the turbulence of wonderland. A style to match an existence and so on and so forth. And zzomph! rocks

I would agree, but that also seems to be pretty common in some of the Young Adult genre and also Sci-fi/Fantasy that are churned out quickly. I only just started the book so my impression is very first and fresh, but I felt the writing is a little too pretensious (as well as choppy - which speeds the read up considerably). I suppose it is likely that the lack of details and choppy go together to move the story along without really immersing the reader.
I am, of course, still reading the book, so it's not that much of a hurdle. I just had hoped that a book based on such a classic juggernaut would live up to some of the original's deep rich tapestry of story.
I agree, but not in a good way. A criticism I have with the book is that it feels all too cinematic, and since Beddor rarely describes smells, taste or how something feels, it feels like the reader is 'watching' the world rather than exploring it. I completely agree that this is not on calibre with HP or His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, however, those were not written to a young audience (no matter where the industry shelves them), they were written with an adult audience in mind and it shows. The writing in Rowling's and Pullman's books show depth of detail in response to their chosen audiences.
However, that said James Patterson is a very popular adult writer who can't write a chapter with a length longer than 4 pages. As an aside, James Patterson is a bit of a joke among the book industry people because of his pitiful writing style.
The YA genre has to hold the interest of both ends of the age group - 10 year olds up through parents. I think it's sad that publishers underestimate their audience's savvy, these kids are reading Tolkien and it doesn't get more sophisticated than that. I wouldn't expect it to change though, LGW's is a streamlined, if slightly bumpy ride, it's good to have expectations, but sometimes you take what you can get.

I think the lack of indepth detail on everything is because it's Wonderland. Wonderland isn't meant to be defined by others, it's meant to be created through ones own imagination. That's why imagination is the main source of power there.

Everyone knows Bibwit's the one who's going to die. Why? In fantasy stories, the tutor always dies.
I'm pretty sure that in the next book, Alyss somehow loses her imagination powers and has to face Redd as a normal human. Vulnerable heroes are more interesting than ultra-powerful ones.
I also hope they can somehow do a cross between LGW Wonderland and American McGee Wonderland. Why? Three words: Hatter vs Hatter.

I just finished The Looking Glass Wars and I loved it! Did anyone catch on to the fact (I am almost positive that it is a fact and will be revealed in Seeing Redd) that Hombourg Molly is Hatter Madigan's daughter? Hatter M. was pining over that dead woman's picture when he got back to Wonderland after 13 years and Molly is 13 years old. Could the mysterious woman have been pregnant and not informed Hatter? And they have the same initials! This is just my theory, but I have a strong suspicion it is right. Anyone else have any ideas?

Can I pick the Batman Mad Hatter? I like him better than Madigan (seriously, watch the 'Mad as a Hatter' episode of the 90's Batman animated series to see why; it's a real tear-jerker.)
I actually had the oddest idea... At the end of the book, where they show the "Mirror" of events between the real world and Wonderland, and they mention Redd being reborn again and again, having acchieved a sort of immortality... Anyone else think they're implying Redd becomes Hitler or something of the sort?

I remember Beddor saying something in an interview about Redd's nfluence inspiring the 60's and 70's crazes...but I may be wrong. Your idea holds water, because in the original Alice in Wonderland, the characters were caricatures of political figures. Or maybe she becomes George Bush or Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein to be more current...

I happened upon hearing this book, and I was SOO glad I bought it!
When I opened the hardcover version for the first time, and saw the droid card illustration, I knew I was going to be amazed. And I wasn't disappointed!
I couldn't put the book down, and already finished I'm already hungering for more! I especially like how the 'true' characters have been portrayed and the unique twist of the entire storyline.
My only curiousity is to wonder with the first book covering practically all the information we know, how will the other two books faire in the series?
Still, I love how Redd was portrayed, the Cheshire Cat, Dodge Anders (of course), as well as Alice. When I originally heard the overview, the idea of Alice being a princess of wonderland didn't really strike my fancy, but after finishing the entire story, it has made a believer out of me!

im not much of a constructive critic but i make a ver y good bad one. i have nothing hateful towards LGW or i wouldnt be here. altho i do think that other books were better constructed than this book such as harry potter and the series of unfortunate events series. they just had more emotions and feelings and more things that would make it a great movie [tho unfortunatly the seies of unfortunate events movie kinda sucked:mad: ]. eragon just seriously boredd me alot. i might see it anyway just to see what i missed in the book and how the movie accompanied for my loss of interest of eragon.
w/e, i liked LGW enuff to read it over n over again. i think it would make a good movie if it had more excitement and bonechilling events.other than that, ive got nothing more to say...

How can the tutor always die? it normally is a significant character (even look at who died in Harry Potter), like Hatter or Dodge ...who better not die.. he better marry Alyss...
i give kudos to you all here... I am in a generous mood....
Dodge has to marry alyss
1. He danced with her at her wedding ball
2. He went after her
3.He had a thing that he acted shy towards her
and
4. He helped her realize in her fight against redd what she was seeing wasn't real
We already know they loved each other when they were young and Alyss still cares about him more tyhan anyone

Just because he's done all that doesn't mean he has to marry her. All that stuff could make it even more dramatic if he dies, or betrays Alyss or something like that.
And don't write in dark red, it's hard to read.

Pfft. You could figure out that plot twist simply by watching Star Wars. But I digress.

that would be much more interesting. but allot of pple do WANT alyss and dogde to get married. i dont think that dodge'll get over his hatred and lonlinesss that easily to admit tht he loves alyss. just because he helped her put and danced with her does not start a serious relationship between the two of them. remember, they have been separated for 13 yrs and thts allot of time to spend not woth someone. while alyss has been in london, shes been trying to froget about him. dodge didnt seem so jubilant when he found that she was still alive.
w/e happens, thats not for us to decide. w/e beddor wants to happen tween the to of them, that we will have to wait for.

I'm warning you, don't read Eragon. Go on www.anti-shurtugal.com (http://www.anti-shurtugal.com) to see why.
What the heck Eragon was an awesome book! true there were some flaws but, overall, i enjoyed justasmuch, or more, than LGW.

No you weren't. "Oh boo hoo the Cheshire Cat killed my daddy CRAWLING IN MY SKIN"
We didn't even get to 'see' any happy moments between him and his dad. They were hinted at, but weren't shown. And seriously, there's one scene where he cries a single tear as if it were Eragon (you won't believe how many people hate that book).haha my little sister is madly in love with that book, and the movie was lame... but that guy was hella hot though... lolz
Anyways, it's kinda sad though, dodge's dad got killed, but i think he went wayyy to far with it, i mean it's kinda psycho-angry-like wouldn't you think, i don't know... i think it was just over kill with the anger. but he should be sad.

And zzomph! rocks
I hope Redd kills Dodge. And I hope Alyss watches her do it. Long live Her Imperial Viciousness. -hearts-
I seriously love you right now!
Anyway, I loved the series so far and the comics.. I still want them to expand on Doppleganger and Bibwit..
And I want the soundtrack... >.<
And yes, RANDOM POST! WOOT!

Earlier I saw mentions of the book reading like a script.. well, didn't he produce films? That may be an influencing factor on the way the author writes.

Saw mentions of Eragon too.. I like the books, but if you want a better Drangon rider type thing, check out The Dragon Riders of Pern Series.. Anne McCaffery is a much better author in my opinion.
I read the first book in two & a half days! The last day I ran out and bought "Seeing Redd" because i just needed it.
It was crazy for me because im not that much of a reader and i thought it would take me atleast a month to finnish it if i pushed myself. But it was nothing like that, I wanted to be left alone to read it!
So far I read like, a third of "Seeing Redd" and im craving to sit down and read it soooo bad but-... Im a Senior in High School and this week is the last week of the semester. ^_^" So im packed with book work.

Congrats on being a seinor. Just wait for college.. the first year is hell, but it gets better. ^_^
And I was the same way with the first book, but I was teased with a bit of it first and then only after my girlfriend was done did I get to read it.
(Oh, and beware the life studies course in College.. I still haven't taken it due to mind numbing reasons.)

Those are some of my favorite books ever. I have all of them. AND I can say that I totally agree with you because I've read Eragon as well. Anne McCaffery is FAR better than Eragon. Not saying that Eragon sucked, it wasn't TERRIBLE...just the Pern series is far superior. LOL

I read both books, one NIGHT each. Difference is I'm a speed reader though. LOL Bugs the hell out of my husband. He thinks I don't retain the information and I should slow down and 'savor' the books. I told him that I do savor them and to open to any page in the story and ask me a question. I can always answer him...I think that drives him even nuttier. LOL Especially that I can do that even with books from like...Melanie Rawn that are epic.

I think I took a couple of days, but mostly because I was reading on the public transit back and forth to work, and it was short periods of time. My fiance' and I sat through the audio book during our drive time to Los Angeles over Thanksgiving weekend, and we were able to complete it, including the 'bonus interview' with Redd, which had me in stitches :D
