I've suggested an IRC room before and I can agree it probably won't work. So, might I point your eyes to the latest development by Google called Google Wave. It works like an IMer but it's all in real time so if you see something being typed up, there is most likely someone on the other end that's online. there's a long video that explains all of it's interesting features. I think it could work well with this site, but it's still in it's early stages and has not been released yet so I don't know how that would affect opinions. Click the link at the bottom to view the video. I think most users here would be interested in what this latest Google product can offer.
